Say goodbye to diapers on show with this cute alternative to baby skirts!

Introducing my latest pattern sucess (they were a bit of a nightmare to get them looking likeĀ a skirt and not shorts!) – cute baby culottes! How cool are these?! They work perfectly to give the appearance of wearing a skirt but without having the dreaded nappy on show. I like this alternative to dressing Ellie in a skirt. I think bloomers look cute but sometimes they seem a bit too cutesy for a casual outfit. Tights are ok for winter, I don’t mind them. But the other alternative you see in the shops seem to be leggings. It’s all about skirts with leggings underneath. I hate the look of leggings. I think they look worse covering up those cute baby fat legs! So culottes are a brilliant work-around for me. Look…

….I’m wearing a cute skirt but guess what…

….I can do THIS!! …

….and you don’t get a full frontal view of my nappy in your face!

(these are the best photos I have at the minute. We had to cut the photo shoot (!) short as Ellie’s bodyguard kept getting in the way).

The culotte pattern will be available for download within the next few days. I think this has to be one of my favourite patterns that I have worked on so far. Just because after a lot of effort, when it came together it worked like a dream.

In case anyone is interested in the top that Ellie is wearing, the pattern for that one is sized from 0-3 years and can be downloaded for free here.

UPDATE: The childrens culotte pattern is now available for download: Baby & Toddler Culotte Sewing Pattern – H :-)

Fantastic website – you’ve inspired me to get my sewing machine back out. The culottes are a brilliant idea – my little one is now crawling & I am fed up of her either living in jeans or showing her nappy!! Is the pattern going to be available soon?

      Hi Carrie,
That’s lovely to hear that I’ve inspired a fellow mum to getting stitching threads for the little one. I definitely can recommend getting the machine out and making a few things. I’ve found it really rewarding. The clothes I’ve made have all been pretty easy patterns so a project for a child sews up in no time, which means I can complete outfits in quick time whilst baby naps. It can save quite a bit of money too, especially if you salvage fabric from your own old clothes (I’ve pillaged quite a nice stash of denim from old jeans and cotton prints from old tops). There are a good selection of sites offering free baby patterns if you google or even have a go at making your own – the baby doesn’t care if you get things a bit wrong on the first attempts – Ellie’s worn all sorts of creations without complaint!
The culotte pattern is more or less ready to go, I’ll finish editing the instructions this week and get it uploaded. I got side tracked constructing a victorian-esque baby coat and everything else was cast to the wayside.
      Happy sewing, H :-)
